Eastern Nazarene cruises past Mitchell with 82-52 victory.

Quincy, Mass.  November 24, 2009.  The Eastern Nazarene College Lions picked up their second win of the season tonight as they beat the Mitchell College Mariners, 82-52, in the PE Lahue Center while going into the Thanksgiving Day Weekend Holiday.  Freshmen post players Shardae Brown (Waterbury, Conn.) and Alexis Malloy (Greenbelt, MD) led the Lions to the victory as they each posted double-doubles, 19 pts-11 rebs and 12 pts-17 rebs respectively.

A 15-2 run to open the second half gave the Lions the distance they needed on the scoreboard, 53-30, as their defense kept constant pressure on the visiting Mariners.  The home team made it a 30-point lead, 66-36, eight minutes into the second half on a Ja’na Jenkins (Oakland, CA) jumper from the baseline before the contest ended in their favor as they shot a hot 44.6% from the field.

The Lions held a small lead through the ninth minute of the game as each player chipped in to take a 9-5 lead.  The Mariners went on a 7-2 run capped by Kaylee Cerruto’s (Torrington, Conn.) two free throws to take a 12-11 lead.  The two teams traded possessions and leads through this tightly officiated first half as both teams reached the bonus in the 13th minute.

Eastern Nazarene gained the largest lead of the half off of a 11-0 run, led by Shardae Brown’s (Waterbury, Conn) consecutive buckets and four free throws, over a three minute period to take a 30-21 lead with 3:15 remaining in the half.

The Lions inside game carried the first half, as Brown hit for 13 points and Malloy hit for 9 points while pulling in 11 rebounds, as the home team went into the locker room with a 10 point, 38-28, lead.

Brown and Malloy each had a double-double and were followed by senior captain Christine Tucker's (Antioch, CA) 17 point performance.  Junior Victoria Sontag (Mont Vernon, NH) made it back for her first two points at home since her ACL injury last season.

Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) led the visitors with 15 points and 5 rebounds.

The Lions rise to 2-3 on the season as they take a week off before they return to action December 1st in an away contest against Newbury College at 7:00 pm.  Mitchell College falls to 0-2 and return to play on the same day at home versus Albertus Magnus College.
