Students from ENC’s Criminal Justice department participated in the 5th annual “Walk for Change” on April 11, a 5K fundraiser and awareness walk for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. Students Mixi Lopez, Alexander Alcantara, Gina Izzo and Elise Sleeper met up with Criminal Justice professor Janese Free in Boston for the event and walked along the Charles River with over 1350 other participants. Sponsors supported the team, which in combined with the entrance fee, generated about $500 for the cause. The event as a whole raised $125,000 for BARCC.

On April 15, a group of students also volunteered at the Prison Book Program  in Quincy, which assists with providing free reading materials to inmates. The students plan on returning later in the month.

Professor Free is proud of the students as they give back to the community and continue to learn about social justice issues and the people affected by crime and inequality. “It is important to me to help expose my students to "real life" experiences and events where they can see the positive things being done to try to help victims, fight crime and support social justice in our communities.”
