Dr. Richard J. Simons (1977, Chemistry), a practicing internist physician and Vice Dean for Educational Affairs at Penn State College of Medicine, will be featured on an upcoming special Discovery Channel program, “When Minutes Matter: Proper Anaphylaxis Treatment”.

Anaphylaxis is the medical term for a severe allergic reaction due to common and everyday triggers, such as food, bee stings and medicines. The program, produced by the Discovery Health division, will update viewers about proper treatments, updates in definitions and information and early recognition of symptoms.

"The Medical Division of the Discovery Channel is top notch,” said Simons. “The team is dedicated to producing high quality, up-to-date educational programs to educate both physicians and the lay public. “

As Vice Dean for Educational Affairs, Dr. Simons oversees education for all medical students at Penn State College of Medicine and all graduate medical student residency programs at Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He also serves as Governor of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Physicians, which is the largest physician specialty organization in the country.

His responsibility for teaching and informing future physicians, his work as a current practicing internist physician and his service on the Board of Governors was what drew Discovery to ask him to participate in a panel with two other physicians filmed at the Newseum in Washington D.C. for this special feature. CNN medical correspondent Rea Blakey served as the moderator for the panel discussion.

“It was truly a pleasure and honor for me to work with the Discovery Channel staff,” Dr. Simons said. “Their pursuit of excellence and attention to detail was very evident and I hope that this program will benefit many patients and physicians."

The program will air on the Discovery Channel on March 19, 26 and April 2 at 8am EST.
