Joan (Kehm, 59) Esselstyn was appointed as a missionary to Africa in 1968. After Joan received her bachelor’s in education at ENC, the couple moved to Kansas City. Joan returned to teach at ENC before pasturing the Wallingford, C.T. Nazarene Church, and was ultimately appointed as a missionary to Africa in 1968. She taught at the Lula Schmelzenbach Memorial Nazarene Theological College, and later taught Christian Education and served as librarian at the Nasarener Teologiese Kollege van Suid-Afrika. Her three children were raised in Africa. Joan and husband Ted (58), who received the 1976 ENC Alumnus of the Year Award, have retired in Ohio and continue to minister.
